Secrets of the Superhuman Food Pyramid: Negative Effects of Mixed Drinks

Mixed drinks are alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages that consist of two or more ingredients. Mixed drinks are oftentimes served during parties because they are versatile and sometimes even an economical choice for large gatherings. These beverages, particularly the ones concocted with alcohol, are popular among individuals who dislike the bitter taste of beer or plain hard alcohol as well. While no doubt some of the tastiest beverages available, mixed drinks may not be a suitable hydration choice especially if you are trying to achieve overall health and wellness.

Mixed Drinks’ Risks:

Alcoholic mixed drinks contain ethanol, the primary type of alcohol found in spirits, wines, and beers. Ethanol is classified as a psychoactive drug and its principal effect is alcohol toxicity. Alcohol is contraindicated in certain segments of the population such as those with mental disorders. Women trying to conceive or are already pregnant are advised against intake, too, as pre- and perinatal alcohol consumption have been linked to miscarriage, preterm delivery, stillbirth, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Alcohol consumption during pregnancy may also result in conditions such as fetal alcohol syndrome and Tourette syndrome.

Ethanol consumption through alcoholic beverage intake is linked to a host of debilitating illnesses, too, such as alcoholic hepatitis or inflammation of the liver, cirrhosis or scarring of the liver, liver cancer, mouth cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, and gastric cancer. Ethanol has been found to aggravate arsenic-induced malignancies as well and so consumption of arsenic-containing products like rice wines and rice along with alcoholic mixed drinks may not be a good idea at all.

Popular among mixed drinks consumers are concoctions made with alcohol and caffeine as well. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant and undue consumption is not recommended for persons with mental disorders as it can bring about restlessness, insomnia, depression, and mania. Alcohol and caffeine both have diuretic mechanisms, too, and so taking mixed drinks with this combination may lead to dehydration. Caffeine’s stimulant action also conceals the depressant effect of alcohol thereby increasing the possibility of binge drinking on these beverages.

Mixed drinks, whether alcoholic or non-alcoholic, are notorious for their high caloric content as well. This comes as no surprise as most flavoring agents and liquers used to concoct these beverages are typically heavily sweetened with sugar. Even those that are marketed as “no crash” mixed drinks are not any healthier as these contain synthetic sweeteners like aspartame, acesulfame, sucralose, or high fructose corn syrup which have harmful side effects like gastrointestinal disorders, headache and vomiting, obesity, and cancer, to name a few.

Synthetic additives are typical ingredients in mixed drinks as well. Food dyes, which have been found to cause hyperactivity in children and certain cancers, are just an example. Preservatives are just as heavily used as these products are meant to have a long shelf life. Sodium benzoate and sulfites are just some of the toxic preservatives that a variety of mixed drinks might contain.
